After a super cold snap earlier in October that dropped all the leaves from the Catalpas in town, the days have warmed up again and importantly, nights will be above freezing...so...on Saturday we got in a day of firewood gathering/forest fire mitigation (also path aeration) & then yesterday Jen D. stomped cob which I used to get the second step to the loft cobbed in while she finished the exterior lime stucco!!!! She has become plasterer extraordinaire!
Below: This shows the system I figured out to put 5" of fiberglass insulation in the ceiling but then add reflectix bubble insulation to increase the R-value. The rafters are 4.5-6" in diameter, but there needs to be a breathing space above insulation; so I made spacers out of plywood. Temporary string holds insulation in place. What isn't in place here yet are sheets of canvas re-purposed from a digital photo lab which will cover the bubble reflectix. Cedar boards go between spacers and bamboo sits on those to hold the whole shebang up.
A piece of cement board is above where the rocket stove feed tube is.
